Beyond the Comfort Zone | It’s All in the Cards

Earlier this week, I met up with my friend Thomas Dixon.

He is a very talented magician from Chile. We have been friends for about two years.

I suggested to Thomas that we both leave home for our respective shows tonight with nothing more than a few decks of cards.

He accepted the challenge and we both delivered our shows with a runtime of 25 minutes.

We both stepped out of our comfort zone and tested our ability to entertain our audience with just a deck of cards.

Mission Accomplished

My set Featured Classic Card Magic:

  • Invisible Opener aka Cards & Poker Chips
  • The Smiling Mule
  • The Changeling
  • Everybody’s Card
  • Lucky Charms

It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that we can entertain an audience with just a deck of cards.

Travel Light, play big with laughter and astonishment.

It is my strongly held belief that laughter, drama, suspense, mystery and sheer magical impact is the hall mark of strong entertaining card magic.

I must be honest and say a few years back, I was hesitant about using just cards in my show. As much as I wanted to, I would fall back on a few other items just for the sake of variety.

I began to see that variety off effects in a card act is important for an audience. We need different premises to sustain interest and build dramatic impact.

Tonight, I went right back into history and presented Robert Houdin’s Metamorphosis. I set the stage with my routine The Changeling.

Take look at this video.

The opening effect in the video is The Changeling. It is a beautiful, clean transformation of playing card. It looks and feels like real magic.

Robert Houdin’s routine builds on this with three selections and three subsequent transformations.

It really is exquisite.

If you are reading this, I encourage you all to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to get more out of your card magic.

Good luck
